And The Bad News Is...

That the termination of Osama bin Laden means that the discussion over the value of the use of torture on captured persons, only calling it "harsh" or "enhanced interrogation" of course, begins again. When a person is your captive, slapping him in the face with your hand may or may not technically be torture, but it is impermissible. Going beyond that to torture is illegal, immoral and we should not do it. Even if, as claimed, it saves lives, it destroys moral character, and we should not do it.

If getting Osama bin Laden means we have to have this discussion all over again then I wish to God we had not gotten Osama bin Laden. Every time we win a physical victory in this benighted nation, we manage to turn it into a moral defeat.
