Memorial Day

Watching the Indianapolis 500 yesterday I was again confronted with the media's inability to comprehend the meaning and purpose of what, to me, is one of the most important holidays we celebrate. The announcers kept referring to, "celebrating and honoring the men and women who serve in the military and as first responders..."

No, we do that, with a marginal degree of correctness, on Veteran's day, a holiday on which we should be honoring those who have served in the past, not those who are presently doing so. I'm okay with that the combination, however, as we seem to have no holiday to honor those who are presently in uniform, and we certainly should do so.  It seems reasonable, then to use one day to honor those presently in service along with those who have served in the past.

Memorial Day, not so much. This is the day set aside to remember and honor those who have given their lives in the service of their country. Please. Do that with a salute and a moment of silence, and then celebrate their lives and their service with a baseball game, a parade or a picnic. Or an auto race.

The Indianapolis 500, by the way, was a fantastic race.
